NATHALIE PALEY AND PIERRE-RICHARD WILLM - Lot 241
NATHALIE PALEY AND PIERRE-RICHARD WILLM During the filming of Jean de Marguenat’s movie “Le Prince Jean”; N. Paley, likely dressed by fashion designer Lucien Lelong, 1934. Photograph, silver gelatin print on vintage card stock, annotated on the back. 24 x 30 cm with white borders Note: Pierre-Richard Willm plays Prince Jean d’Axel, who enlists in the Foreign Legion after a quarrel with his father. Upon his return, he discovers that his brother has usurped his title and that Claire d’Arlong, the woman he loves—played by Nathalie Paley—is betrothed to another man. Adapted from a play by Charles Méré, this melodrama had already been made into a silent film in 1928. Born Princess Romanov, Nathalie Paley was at the time the wife and one of the iconic muses of fashion designer Lucien Lelong. This connection makes it plausible that a costume was created by his fashion house, but I have found no credits or archival documents to confirm this attribution for the film.
