JOANNE WOODWARD AND PAUL NEWMAN - Lot 84
JOANNE WOODWARD AND PAUL NEWMAN Photo of Joanne Woodward and Paul Newman during the filming of *Paris Blues*, 1961. In the background, a poster advertising a Louis Armstrong concert at the Palais de Chaillot in Paris. Film directed by Martin Ritt, produced by photographer Sam Shaw, with set design by Alexandre Trauner. Photograph, vintage silver gelatin print, stamped and annotated on the back. 20.5 x 25.3 cm. Note: Taken during the filming of *Paris Blues*, a 1961 film directed by Martin Ritt. Paul Newman plays Ram Bowen, an American trombonist living in Paris who aspires to become a composer. Joanne Woodward plays Lillian Corning, an American tourist with whom he falls in love, but who wants him to leave the French capital and return with her to the United States. Their story parallels that of saxophonist Eddie Cook, played by Sidney Poitier, and Connie Lampson, played by Diahann Carroll. Filmed in Paris, the movie blends romance with the world of jazz while addressing the different treatment of Black musicians in France and the United States. Louis Armstrong appears in the role of trumpeter Wild Man Moore, accompanied by music by Duke Ellington.
