THAILAND - GERMANY. An Italian-style album dedicated to the - Lot 630
THAILAND - GERMANY. An Italian-style album dedicated to the Emden, containing 232 vintage silver prints in various formats, most mounted on sheets. This ship was a light cruiser of the German Reichsmarine, commissioned on October 15, 1925. It was used primarily as a training ship for German naval cadets, in accordance with the restrictions imposed on Germany after 1919. It embarked on its fourth major overseas voyage on December 1, 1930. This was the very voyage that took it to Siam. Its route to Bangkok is reconstructed as follows: Wilhelmshaven, Vigo, the Mediterranean, Souda Bay, Port Said, the Suez Canal, Aden, Cochin, Colombo, Trincomalee, Port Blair, Sabang, Bangkok. Then: Victoria, Labuan, Manila, Nanjing, Shanghai, Nagasaki, Osaka, Niijima, Tsuruga, Hakodate, Otaru, Yokohama, Guam, before returning via the Indian Ocean, Africa, and the Atlantic. The Emden finally left Wilhelmshaven on December 8, 1931, after more than a year at sea. Thus, between March 6 and 15, 1931, the Emden was in Bangkok. The visit was officially marked by a grand reception held at the palace of Prince Paribatra Sukhumbandh, Prince of Nakhon Sawan. Many Siamese officers who had received training in Germany were in attendance.
