Peder Severin Krøyer, Hip, Hip, Hurrah
Hip, Hip, Hurrah! by Danish artist Peder Severin Krøyer depicts the Skagen painters, a group of Scandinavian artists who formed a free community in Jutland between the 1880s and early 1890s. The painting is done in the typical style of the Skagen painters, close to the impressionists and naturalists. The apparent friendliness and play of light in the scene is a true celebration of life, making the viewer want to toast with them.
The Skagen school fell into oblivion for a few decades. It was the sale in 1978 of Quiet Evening on the Beach in Skagen to the German press magnate Axel Springer, for the highest price ever awarded to a Danish painter, that revived interest in Peder Severin Krøyer and his Skagen companions. To our great delight.
The Danish painter Peder Severin Krøyer, celebrated in his time and little known in France, is to be discovered at the Musée Marmottan, which exhibits his paintings of Skagen, a fishing village in northern Jutland where a colony of artists painted the sea and sky at dusk:
