Yves Klein, Anthropométrie suaire, 1961
The first public presentation of the Anthropometries of the Blue Period took place on March 9, 1960 at the National Gallery of Contemporary Art. Yves Klein wanted his Anthropometries to become more than an artistic performance, a ritual. The public had to come in evening clothes, Yves came in a black suit, and at a sign from his hand the orchestra present began its "Monoton Symphony" (a continuous and uninterrupted sound for 20 minutes, followed by a silence of 20 minutes. During this time 3 nude models entered the room with pots of blue paint, put it on their bodies, and the artist then directed his live brushes on the canvas without a word.
The forms of the body are reduced to the essential dimensions of the trunk, and the legs as a reference for measuring the human body. For Yves Klein, these prints are the most concentrated form of expression of vital energy. He said that "they signify that health which leads us to being." One of the main subjects of Anthropometries is weightlessness. In the table below, he summarizes the ideas about the Earth's climate, atmospheric impressions and the moments of state in nature.
