From battlefields to peaceful shores, from populations caught in turmoil to landscapes across our regions and the far corners of the world, José Nicolas captures the same reality through his lens: the fragility and beauty of life.
Born in Casablanca in 1956, a former paratrooper turned international correspondent, he discovered photography during his military assignments. His encounter with Bernard Kouchner in Beirut in 1982 marked a decisive turning point. Working alongside Médecins du Monde and later for the Sipa Press agency, José Nicolas spent more than a decade traveling through major conflict zones: Lebanon, Afghanistan, Kurdistan, Chad, the Iran-Iraq War, Romania, Liberia, Bosnia, Somalia, and Rwanda.
Wounded in Rwanda in 1994 while covering Operation Turquoise, he subsequently left Sipa Press and began developing a more personal body of work. His focus gradually shifted toward landscapes, coastlines, mountains, artisans, and scenes of everyday life.
This dedicated auction showcases the full richness of his vision. It brings together historic photographs taken in the heart of conflicts, humanistic portraits of the men and women he encountered, as well as landscapes of France and the world, captured in all their power, silence, and light.
For José Nicolas, photography never seeks the spectacular for its own sake. It bears witness, reveals, and preserves. Even in the midst of chaos, the photographer remains attentive to human dignity. When faced with landscapes, he upholds the same standard: taking the time to observe and convey what deserves to be remembered.
