Jean SOUVERBIE (1891–1981) - Lot 28
Jean SOUVERBIE (1891–1981) The Harvest, 1960 Oil on hardboard Signed and dated lower right 60 x 41 cm Note: Created in 1960, *La Cueillette* is a work by Jean Souverbie (1891–1981), a French painter whose work occupies an important place in 20th-century figurative painting. Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and closely associated with the “Return to Order” movement, Souverbie developed a monumental style characterized by rigorously constructed compositions, figures with powerful volumes, and great formal restraint. The theme of harvesting reflects his interest in scenes of rural life and human labor, subjects he treated with a timeless quality and a quest for balance rooted in the classical tradition. His work combines observation of reality with the idealization of forms, in a personal visual language that earned him numerous public commissions, notably for monumental decorations and official buildings.
