TEMPLE OF ZEUS - Lot 185
TEMPLE OF ZEUS Statues (Apollo, Woman, and Centaur) at Olympia, Greece, 1920s. 2 photographs by Studio Suisse Racine—Alexandria (Egypt), silver gelatin prints mounted on cardboard, photographer’s signature (illegible) beneath the images and stamped + annotated on the backs. Approximately 16 x 10.5 cm each Approx. 24.5 x 21.5 cm each sheet. Note: This set of two photographs taken in the 1920s by the Swiss Racine Studio in Alexandria is dedicated to the sculptures of the Temple of Zeus at Olympia, one of the most important sanctuaries of ancient Greece. The images depict several sculpted figures from the temple’s monumental decoration, notably Apollo as well as characters from the famous mythological scenes on the pediments, including a woman and a centaur. Discovered during the major archaeological campaigns of the 19th century, these sculptures are masterpieces of classical Greek art and bear witness to the extraordinary skill of the 5th-century BCE sculpture workshops. Produced by a photography studio operating in Egypt, these prints also illustrate the interest shown by travelers, scholars, and collectors in the major archaeological sites of the Mediterranean during the interwar period. They thus serve as fascinating documents that combine ancient heritage with early 20th-century travel photography.
