CARVEN - SUMMER FASHION - Lot 22
CARVEN - SUMMER FASHION Beachwear, swimsuits, 1940–1946. 5 photos (including three by the Dorvyne studio), vintage silver prints (including three on card stock), photographer’s stamp on three of the backs, labels on two (descriptive) and annotations (including dates and descriptions) on all. 22.5 x 16.5 cm to 23.7 x 18.3 cm. Note: This set of five press photographs featuring Carven’s beachwear collections illustrates the summer elegance of the immediate postwar period. Produced between 1940 and 1946—several of them by the Dorvyne studio—these prints showcase the creations of the fashion house founded by Marie-Louise Carven, a leading figure in the revival of French fashion. Swimsuits, light dresses, and beachwear are staged in settings evoking swimming pools, terraces, and seaside resorts, where modern lines blend with femininity and a renewed sense of optimism following the war years. These photographs bear witness to the rise of fashion photography for the press and the importance of photo agencies in promoting couture collections. The careful framing, play of light, and elegant poses highlight the models’ silhouettes while helping to shape a new vision of leisure, where vacations, sunbathing, and water sports become symbols of a modern lifestyle. Retaining their original annotations, stamps, and labels, this collection constitutes a valuable documentary record of French beachwear fashion in the 1940s, at the intersection of the history of photography, haute couture, and the illustrated press.
