Louis FLOUTIER (1882-1936) - Vue du Pays Basque Espagnol ou - Lot 26
Louis FLOUTIER (1882-1936) - Vue du Pays Basque Espagnol ou de l'Aragon - Oil on canvas - Signed lower right - 65 x 101 cm - Slight craquelure and small missing parts This work is referenced in Mary-Anne Prunet's catalog raisonné. Note: Born in Toulouse, Louis Floutier settled alone in a studio on the Pergola in Saint-Jean-de-Luz in 1922, devoting himself to painting the Basque country. His favorite subjects were the region's landscapes, customs and inhabitants. When he died in Saint-Jean-de-Luz in 1936, he left behind more than a thousand works, scattered today in private and public collections. Louis Floutier's love of the Basque country didn't develop immediately, but it grew deeper and deeper over time. Wandering with his easel from Urrugne to Ascain, from Saint-Jean-de-Luz to Mutriku, studying the subtle colors of gorse or checking whether the Nive was bluer above Arnaga all convinced him. As a lover of light, like many artists of the Impressionist era, he was quickly won over by the sea, the mountains and the white facades of the Labourd farms.
