MAE WEST - Lot 25
MAE WEST Paramount Fashion publicity portrait, 1933. Photo, vintage silver print, credits under image, stamps (including Paramount production) and annotation on back. 25.5 x 20.3 cm. Note: A beautiful promotional photograph of Mae West taken by Paramount in 1933, when the actress was at the height of her fame, following the success of such films as She Done Him Wrong and I'm No Angel. This image is fully in line with the iconography built around her personality: self-assurance, assertive sensuality and assertive stage presence. The frontal pose, with arms raised, accentuates the verticality of the silhouette and highlights the tight, shimmering dress, typical of the Hollywood glamour aesthetic of the early 1930s. The addition of fur and jewels reinforces this image of sophistication and luxury, while the framing in a framed space (between two panels) creates a theatrical effect evocative of a stage entrance. Paramount prints from this period, with printed credits and stamps on the reverse, were intended for press distribution and are today sought-after documents for their aesthetic and historical value. The presence of copyright notices under the image and markings on the back confirm the original, promotional nature of the print. Despite wear and tear on the margins, the image retains a strong visual quality and iconic impact linked to the figure of Mae West, one of the most striking and transgressive personalities of pre-Code cinema. White edges handled, in particular two small misses. Note:
