Commission & title
Started in 1503 and reworked over several years, the painting owes its name "Mona Lisa" to the patronymic of its commissioner.

The painting is also often called "Mona Lisa", which is a diminutive of Madonna Lisa, "Madame Lisa".

The painting entered the royal collections of Francis I and did not leave France until it was stolen from the Louvre in 1911 and recovered two years later.
