Franck SCURTI (1965) - Lot 11
Franck SCURTI (1965) Naked 2006 Pigment print, numbered and signed. Paper : Velin d'Arches 250 g Format : 270 x 380 mm Justified 44/120 Note : A major French artist on the contemporary scene, Franck Scurti has been developing a body of work since the 1990s based on the appropriation of signs from popular culture, slogans, media images and ordinary gestures. His work questions the circulation of images and messages in contemporary society, revealing their ambiguities, contradictions and critical potential. With Naked (2006), Scurti's work is both direct and ironic, playing on the discrepancy between text and image. The frontal, smiling female body is partially concealed by a panel bearing the inscription "NO MORE NUDE". This paradoxical injunction - brandished by a precisely nude body - is at the heart of the work's tension. It highlights the hypocrisy of moralistic discourse and the contemporary saturation of images of the body. The figure is treated in a deliberately simple, almost illustrative figurative style, which reinforces the visual effectiveness of the message. The bright green background, clean palette and contrast between the assumed nudity and the authoritative slogan give the image an immediacy akin to a poster or manifesto. Here, Scurti hijacks the codes of protest and visual communication, the better to reveal their limits.
