Kawamata - Lot 95
Kawamata 11/09/2001 - 11/03/2011 48 pages, paperback, dust jacket Numbered 237 from an edition of 285 + current edition "L'art en écrit", volume 88, 2013. Editions Janninck Enclosed: original artwork signed and dated by the artist Format: 125 x 210 mm (French) Note: Tadashi Kawamata was born in Mikasa, on the island of Hokkaido, in 1953; he lives and works in Tokyo and Paris. He has created site-specific architectural works all over the world. His work reflects on architectural, urban and landscape space as a product and a social context. A careful study of the human relationships that have defined it, and the lifestyles that flow from it, enable him to gradually determine the nature of his project each time. His works, most often ephemeral, are generally made of wood, sometimes in the form of salvaged materials from the immediate environment. Tadashi Kawamata's interventions recreate bridges between past and present, between outside and inside, between actual and potential: they reveal a different identity for spaces and places, highlighting the invisible yet very real part of their cultural and social dimension. The creation of a community with whom he shares the research and effort of physical work drives and underpins each of his projects. In the evocatively titled 11/09/2001 - 11/03/2011, which is both disturbing and fascinating, the artist compiles, in the manner of a souvenir album, photographs taken from newspaper articles reporting natural disasters, attacks or accidents. He pushes aside the tragic aspect to retain only the aesthetics that inspire him, evoking the fragility of all construction, the ephemerality of life and instability. The first edition is accompanied by an original signed artwork.
