BARRAGE DE BISSORTE - SAVOIE, construction of the hydroelect - Lot 125
BARRAGE DE BISSORTE - SAVOIE, construction of the hydroelectric plant, 1930s 8 photos, vintage silver prints Annotated on backs Dimensions: 24 x 18 cm each Note: These photographs document the construction of the Bissorte hydroelectric plant in Savoie in the 1930s. Located in the Maurienne valley, the Bissorte dam and power plant is one of the major hydroelectric projects built in the French Alps in the early XXᵉ century to meet the industrial boom and growing need for electricity. Commissioned in the late 1930s, the scheme harnesses the waters of Lac de Bissorte, a high-altitude reservoir feeding a power station below. These installations contributed to the development of "white coal", the term used to describe the hydraulic energy that played a decisive role in the industrialization of the Alpine regions. The views presented here provide documentary evidence of the major engineering projects and hydroelectric construction techniques in the Alps between the wars.
