UNITED STATES. FRANK SINATRA, November 13, 1945. - Lot 244
UNITED STATES. FRANK SINATRA, November 13, 1945. The rector sent for the famous singer Frank Sinatra to plead the Black cause with the students after singing his repertoire, following a protest by students at an American university against the admission of Blacks to their classes. Silver print Captioned on back Very slight folding and very slight silver oxidation Dimensions: 24.5 x 18.5 cm Note : A rare photographic record of Frank Sinatra's public commitment in the aftermath of the Second World War, this silver print dated November 13, 1945 immortalizes the famous singer addressing American students at a time of racial tension surrounding the admission of black students to university. Already a huge popular star, Sinatra was also one of the first American entertainment personalities to publicly defend civil rights and denounce racial discrimination. This photograph thus captures a historic moment when the artist went beyond his role as a singer to become a committed voice in post-war American social debate. The photograph, with its intense documentary quality, shows Sinatra at the microphone in a grave, concentrated attitude, at the heart of a scene imbued with tension and collective attention. A silver print captioned on the back, it shows very slight folding and discrete oxidation of the silver, characteristics compatible with its age. A particularly interesting photograph for collectors of American music and cinema, as well as for lovers of historical documents relating to the beginnings of the civil rights movement in the United States.
