ANTONIO BEATO (1835-1906) Temple of Edfon, ca. 1875 Albumen print, mounted on card 26 x 37 cm Note: A photographer active in Egypt in the second half of the XIXᵉ century, Antonio Beato is one of the leading exponents of Orientalist photography. Based in Cairo, he produced numerous views of major ancient sites, aimed at a Western clientele fascinated by the remains of ancient Egypt. This image of the Edfu temple highlights the monumentality and remarkable state of preservation of the Ptolemaic sanctuary. The precise framing and the quality of the albumen print testify to an approach that is both documentary and aesthetic, characteristic of this type of production, which was widely distributed at the time.
